Myanmar Green Land Natural
Founded in 1999 by U Sai Wan Maing, Green Land Coffee Plantation is located in Pyin Oo Lwin, Myanmar, a hill town celebrated for its botanical gardens and colonial-era charm. Nestled at 1,150 meters above sea level on the Shan Plateau, the farm benefits from fertile soil enriched by nitrogen-fixing erythrina trees, which dot the landscape with vibrant orange-red flowers.
Originally a 30-acre enterprise, Green Land has expanded to 450 acres, making it one of Myanmar's largest coffee farms with over 580,000 trees. The main variety grown is a Catimor strain from Costa Rica, supplemented by SL34, which accounts for 10% of the crop. Experiments with Yellow Bourbon, Caturra, and Catuai varieties are also underway.
Challenges include excessive shade in some areas, which impacts coffee quality, and the onset of rust affecting older trees. Each acre yields about 300 kilograms of green coffee on average. Additionally, macadamia trees are cultivated, producing a crop more valuable than coffee.
The plantation employs 15 full-time workers, with the workforce expanding to 100 during harvest season. Around 50 workers are active daily. While Green Land has its own basic wet and dry milling facilities, it often utilizes the superior equipment of Mandalay Coffee Group for processing.
Green Land’s combination of innovation, crop diversity, and partnerships has established it as a key player in Myanmar’s growing coffee industry.
