COMSA

COMSA, or Café Orgánico Marcala S.A., was founded in 2001 by 61 farmers in Marcala, La Paz, Honduras. Faced with low coffee prices and a reliance on synthetic agricultural inputs, the group set out to create a more sustainable and independent way of farming. They committed to organic production and began seeking access to speciality coffee markets.

The transition was not easy, but through technical support, shared learning and close collaboration, COMSA developed a regenerative farming model known as the “5 Ms”: organic matter, microorganisms, minerals, fermented molecules and knowledge, or “grey matter”. This philosophy now underpins both its agricultural practices and its education programmes, helping members build greater resilience, confidence and independence.

Since those early beginnings, COMSA has grown to include more than 1,600 members and is now regarded as one of the most influential coffee cooperatives in Honduras.

Most farmers deliver their coffee directly to COMSA’s facilities in Marcala, while decentralised collection points and technical visits support producers in more remote areas. On arrival, each delivery is weighed, coded and sampled before passing through a series of quality checks. This straightforward system helps maintain traceability and consistency from the farm through to export, without placing unnecessary demands on producers.

COMSA’s work reaches far beyond coffee processing. Economically, members benefit from Fairtrade premiums and organic certification, helping them secure stronger prices and greater market stability. Socially, the cooperative invests heavily in education. The COMSA International School, founded in 2015, uses innovative teaching methods and supports almost 200 students from pre-primary through to secondary level.

Environmental regeneration is also central to COMSA’s work. The cooperative leads large-scale agroforestry projects, including the planting of 160,000 trees across 4,000 acres. These initiatives are designed to improve soil health, strengthen biodiversity and increase carbon capture. Funding comes from cooperative resources, Fairtrade premiums and partnerships with organisations such as Grow Ahead, which directs climate resilience funding towards farmer-led projects.

COMSA holds both Organic and Fairtrade certifications and has developed long-term relationships with international coffee buyers. Its partnership with DRWakefield began in 2022, focusing on certified coffees and collaborative sustainability projects. The cooperative also works with organisations including Cooperative Coffees and other groups supporting regenerative agriculture.

By combining technical expertise, community investment and environmental stewardship, COMSA has created a model that balances coffee quality with resilience and social progress. It now serves as an important example for cooperatives seeking to build a fairer and more sustainable global coffee supply chain.
